Last month Vermont’s WCAX ran a story about how Senator Joe Benning is attempting to pass a bill to add an official Latin Vermont state motto — “Stella quarta decima fulgeat” — which would translate to “May the 14th Star Shine Bright,” a reference to Vermont being the 14th state. The idea was suggested to him by a middle school student from Lyndonville.
You know, Latin! The language you studied in high school to meet your college language requirement because you were too lazy to take a real language class and the Latin teacher was also an Octogenarian. Err, just me then? Anyway, Latin, as in, the ancient language. Not as in Latin America.
Unfortunately that fact was lost on many people, and when WCAX posted the story to social media their Facebook page was instantly transformed into a hotbed of frothing stupidity. The thread has since been slammed with commenters ridiculing the initial commenters, but here are some screen shots that were preserved for posterity:
And then there’s this guy. He is sincere? Ironic? I don’t even know anymore.
