Meet bodybuilder Romario Dos Santos, a man whose attempt to become a real-life Hulk almost cost him both arms. It started when the Brazilian-born Dos Santos injected his body with site enhancement oil, commonly referred to as synthol. Bodybuilders often use it to “hide a lagging body part,” one that does not respond well to training. It consists of oil, lidocaine and alcohol, though street versions may contain other ingredients.
Needless to say, injecting yourself with synthol leads to huge problems like pulmonary embolisms, nerve damage and, in Romarios’s case, oil-filled pockets that cause your muscles to turn into rock.
I remember the doctor told me that they would need to amputate both arms – they said everything in there, all my muscles, were rock.’
Doctors were able to salvage the limbs after cutting out the muscle. Dos Santos is synthol free two years later, but still feels like taking it again.
‘I still feel like taking synthol but I won’t take it again. If you take it once there will definitely be a second time – it’s addictive.’
Pro-tip: Don’t inject your body with oil. Bad things happen.
