Alex “Superman” Johnson and Brey Dorsett are just another balling-ass couple showing off their balling-ass ways at their local gym. They get together to practice moves that might help Alex’s pro career in Canada. Or to help Brey practice her fleet-footed guard moves. Or maybe to feel closer as a couple.
For some reason, this day was different. The couple’s balling-ass friends all showed up to watch a one-on-one showdown between them. A few points in, as Alex dominated his Better Half with a quick first step, Brey decided to dish out a hard foul that knocked him off his feet.
But you can’t keep a real baller down, so Alex “Superman” got on one knee. He proposed to Brey in a show of surprising dramatic flair. Flustered and ecstatic, Brey says yes as all the cameras close in on the two squeezing tight for an engagement hug. The reason it sounds like something from out of a movie is because it is. Love and Basketball starring Sanaa Lathan and Omar Epps featured a pivotal marriage proposal between the friends-turned-lovers that really made the film.
Or so I’m told. It’s not like I cry every time that scene starts rolling. The opposite. Usually just turn it off, and go about my business.
Until Brey and Alex had to go and remind me of all these feels. Gulp.
