The East Street Bridge in Westwood, Mass. is notorious amongst locals. The low-lying train bridge may not fool anyone in the vicinity, but visiting truck drivers frequently find themselves caught unaware. The bridge, which is maintained by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, takes out trucks on a near monthly basis. Several signs and warning lights stand before the bridge to warn away tall vehicles, but nothing seems to prevent these accidents. The hits just keep on coming, and a convenient camera is set up to capture every viral moment.
On August 20, a food delivery truck drives at a seemingly normal speed with no indication of stopping. The video is almost painful to watch, since we know what’s coming, and the impact does not disappoint those looking for serious wreckage. The truck’s compartment shatters into pieces, and the cab shakes violently, rearing off its wheels. This wreck even ironically obliterates the bridge’s “low clearance” sign. In a telling twist, no one stops to help this truck driver. Even the YouTube comment section notices the fellow drivers’ indifference:
Everyone immediately turns around like “damn it, I’ve stuff to do”.
The cars at the end are like “Nope, not putting up with this sh*t today.”
I loved how nobody cared if the guy in the truck was alright. Just turn around don’t even bother to check. Goodbye. LOL.
The fact that no one stopped to help could be viewed in a few ways: (1) Harsh indifference; or (2) Weary acceptance. These people have seen this bridge take out trucks before, and they’ll see it again.
Here’s another truck hitting the same bridge in June. The fallout isn’t as spectacular, but the impact is no less jarring.
