Jared Fogle is currently facing sentencing for child pornography charges, as well as engaging in sex with minors; crimes for which he faces up to 12.5 years in prison. Fogle plead guilty as part of a plea deal to reduce his prison time, however, his lawyers are attempting to get that number as low as possible.
As such, on Thursday, Fogle’s defense team pulled out one last ditch effort by introducing a psychiatrist who claims that it was the Subway diet that triggered his sexual urges, and that he only suffers from “mild pedophilia.” (As opposed to full-blown pedophilia.)
“Once he lost weight, it seemed as though in a short time he had hyper-sexuality,” forensic psychiatrist John Bradford testified for the defense at Fogle’s sentencing Thursday morning in Indianapolis. “There are brain disorders that can be associated with sexual drive.”
Whether or not the judge determining Fogle’s fate will buy this is a long shot, for sure, and you’d have to assume Subway is probably not thrilled about being blamed for a guy’s sexual urges towards children. Many are complaining that even if Fogle receives the max sentence under his plea deal, he’s still getting off too easy, as there are plenty of non-famous child pornographers in the criminal justice system who have had to pay far greater for lesser crimes. Either way, we won’t have long to wait to find out: Fogle will be sentenced Thursday afternoon.
Update: Fogle was sentenced to 188 months, or just over 15.5 years, with a minimum of 13 years before he’s eligible for parole.
