On Wednesday, the United States Treasury confirmed that Harriet Tubman would replace Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill. This denomination held great significance during a few key periods in Tubman’s life, but the news is somewhat muted by knowing this change won’t take place until at least 2030. Will people even use paper money at that point? This move is mostly symbolic, but people are still celebrating, for the revered abolitionist will be the first woman on U.S. paper currency in a century. (Update: Jackson will still appear on the back of the bill.)
The first place to look for reactions to this news would, ideally, be presidential candidates. The Republicans have remained silent on Twitter in the hours since the announcement, but dropout Ben Carson did tell Neil Cavuto that maybe Tubman should be on the $2 bill instead. For reasons unknown, Carson doesn’t want to see Jackson go, but let’s move onto the positives. Hillary Clinton spoke out by saying, “A woman, a leader, and a freedom fighter. I can’t think of a better choice for the $20 bill than Harriet Tubman.” Bernie Sanders felt similarly and tweeted, “I cannot think of an American hero more deserving of this honor than Harriet Tubman.”
