Pour that bottle upside down long enough and every record starts to sound like the greatest joint ever recorded. To hear Sayyi and Jeremih’s “Love That Sound” on a sober afternoon, however, is to recognise temporary brilliance in it’s simplicity. The clanging chimes in Soundzdope’s simplified beat and catchy hook that brought the two Chicago artists together will be a blessing and a curse.
Right now, this song can get spins at the cook-out, the club, the afterparty and maybe even the backseat. The problem with this simplicity is that it might not pass the hardest test of all – longevity. This song will definitely get spins over the next few weekends and the leaves might even turn brown while it plays but it’s easy to see a time when those chimes, mixed so high in the beat, are going to drive the neighborhood and the bartenders/skrippers crazy.
While Jeremih is kind to help his fellow emerging Windy City natives out with heaters, at some point he will need to start keeping the bangers for himself. The difference between a hot single and a hot streak is found in the catalogue and Mr. Late Nights seems more focused on amplifying other artists than finding his own long-term plan.
In the meantime, we can all scream along.
