There are a lot of words that can be used to describe the movies produced by WWE Studios, but “inspirational” wouldn’t be one of them. Up until now, horror movies and rejected Die Hard sequel plots have pretty much been WWE’s bread and butter, but that changes with The Resurrection of Gavin Stone.
Yes, the company run by a man who once booked himself over God himself in a tag match is now in the faith-based movie business. The Resurrection of Gavin Stone stars Brett Dalton (Agent Ward from Agents of SHEILD), Anjelah Johnson-Reyes (Moms’ Night Out), D.B. Sweeney (Touch, Two and a Half Men) and ol’ HBShizzle himself (that deer-hunting show). Prepare yourself for INSPIRATIONAL FEELINGS, because here’s the plot description from the official WWE press release:
“The Resurrection of Gavin Stone tells the story of a former child star turned washed-up and troubled actor. After receiving a 200-hour community service sentence, Gavin Stone (Brett Dalton), pretends to be a Christian so he can play Jesus in a mega-church Easter production in order to fulfill his hours of service. Along the way, he reconnects with his past and builds upon his faith to discover that his most important role is far away from the shining lights of Hollywood.”
“We wanted to tell the story of why Hollywood is bad, and Christianity is good, so we went to Hollywood and made that story into a movie. What?”
I suppose we’ll see if WWE can make a dent in the faith-based market, but I’m not sure I believe. If it doesn’t work out, there’s still some niche genres WWE has yet to exploit. Personally, I’m hoping for a Nikki Bella-starring 90s erotic thriller, or a Home Alone rip-off featuring Rusev and Hot Summer as the burglars.
