According to Deadline, Sony Pictures Television and Televisa will soon start production on a series based on the life and times of Mexican lucha legend Blue Demon:
The 65-episode, hour-long drama Blue Demon will air across Latin America on multiple Televisa platforms. SPT and Televisa will jointly distribute the series throughout the rest of the world.
“There is a growing demand in the region for stories about real people and events, a trend which started in Colombia and has now made its way to Mexico,” says Angelica Guerra, senior vice president and managing director, production, Latin America and U.S. Hispanic for SPT. “Blue Demon will offer audiences an intimate look at one of Luche Libre’s greatest legends, exploring a complex and turbulent world that very few knew about.”
The show is said to follow his story from his beginnings as the fifth child in a family of twelve, through working on the railroad in Monterrey, to the meeting with pro wrestler Ignacio Vera that would ultimately lead to his storied career in lucha libre.
Blue Demon also appeared as a background player in the movies of cult film and lucha legend El Santo. Blue Demon would then go on to star in 25 luchador films during his career. Blue Demon’s iconic blue mask is synonymous with lucha culture — a mask he refused to take off in public up until his death in 2000.
Production of the series will begin in Mexico City in April 2016.
