The wait is finally over, folks: Season two of Lucha Underground is here, and it’s already spectacular. We here at With Spandex try real hard to be impartial, but it’s hard to deny that this is our favorite show without question, period, full stop.
From the outside, it’s easy to see how you could dismiss it as the latest fad, or some kind of hipster nonsense. I mean, there are only so many times a new show can be described as ‘gritty’ before you kind of throw up your hands and avoid it almost out of spite, y’know? But here’s the thing: Lucha Underground deserves the hype.
We’ve already written a handy-dandy catch-up guide to try to lure you to the Pentagon, Jr. side of things, so most of the work is already done if you’re coming in late. A show that has things like ‘a real dragon’ and ‘a f*cking machine’ sounds bonkers out of context (especially if you put the emphasis on the wrong part of the latter), but we promise it’s bonkers in the best way possible. Even The Rock thinks it’s cool, and everyone loves that guy, right?
There are those who still heavily criticize Lucha Underground, trying to apply traditional wrestling company ideals to a non-traditional wrestling show. To restate: Lucha Underground is a show with wrestling, and not necessarily the other way around. If you want to be entertained, this is your show. If you want to watch a slick, gorgeous, non-WWE wrestling show that doesn’t look like it was filmed with a VCR, this is your show. If you want to see baller wrestling that supports progress into the future while embracing the traditional values of Lucha Libre’s past, this is your show. If you want a joyful, welcoming celebration of Mexican culture that warmly invites you to learn more and embrace it without ever feeling exclusive, yeah, that’s right, this is your show.
Also if you want a show with a a dragon and his cool spaceboy astronaut BFF and a flippy birdman who can’t die who made out with Derrick Bateman’s ex-girlfriend and then fought Actual Death…like, yeah. There’s all of that stuff, too.
