Donald Trump changes his mind all the time, but he’s remained consistent on one issue since last summer. In July, Trump famously made the “somebody’s doing the raping” statement to Don Lemon. Trump was defending his belief that Mexicans don’t send their best and brightest — just the drug dealers, murderers, and rapists — to America. This continues to be Trump’s justification for the Wall, which can’t realistically happen, but Trump still mentions it during every victory speech. And during an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper, Trump said, “I’m building a wall” too many times to count.
The discussion revolved around the biggest Trump issue at present, which the public seems content to overlook. This would be the Trump University lawsuit that involves an astounding amount of fraud allegations and will go to trial during the GOP convention. The case is important because Trump’s business practices are the only true measure of evaluating his trustworthiness (since he lacks a public service record). Of course, Trump sees the entire case as unfair, and he’s spoken to many nameless attorneys who say so. Despite all of the jilted former Trump University students, Trump insists that his failed school received overwhelmingly stellar reviews.
Trump’s biggest beef is how the federal judge on the case is named Judge Gonzalo Curiel. Naturally, Trump assumed that this is a “hater” judge who “we believe, is Mexican.” As Jake Tapper points out here, Curiel hails from Indiana, but Trump insisted, “He’s proud of his heritage. I respect him for that. He’s a Mexican. We’re building a wall between here and Mexico.” Tapper asked, “If you are saying he cannot do his job because, is that not the definition of racism?” Trump replied, “No, I don’t think so at all, I’m building a wall.” According to the Washington Post, Tapper asked his initial question and followed up 23 times. He tried to make Trump understand his own unsavory words. And Trump kept answering, “I’m building a wall.” Here’s that exchange.
Tapper also confronted Trump on his denial of ever saying Japan and South Korea should arm themselves with nukes. Trump believes that it costs too much money for U.S. troops to help protect those two countries from North Korea. So, unless those countries start paying for this protection, Trump thinks nukes would be a simple, money-saving solution. Hillary Clinton criticized Trump for this statement, and then Trump insisted that he ever said it. Here, Tapper pulls out Trump’s direct quotes, and someone can’t handle the truth.
