It was a sad day when former Divas Champion Eve Torres left WWE. Despite her role in some questionable storylines, an aggressive attitude and the introduction of Jiu Jitsu-influenced moves courtesy of her then-fiancee Rener Gracie, Torres had finally hit her stride in becoming a force to be reckoned with. All of this was prior to the “Divas Revolution,” sadly, and making your way as a WWE Diva was still a daunting and frustrating task.
While promoting her upcoming role in the Jackie Chan film Skiptrace, she opened up about her struggles in WWE, and missing out on the historic changes the women’s division has undergone:
It’s really exciting for me to watch, but at the same time it’s also hard because when I was a part of it, the movement hadn’t really started. It was always there. You saw the women trying to fight and fight. Unfortunately, it didn’t get as far as I would have liked when I was there. There was a lot of frustration with that. It was a part of why I decided to move on from WWE. So it is actually a beautiful thing to watch this finally happening…
Women can be a huge draw. We can be just as talented, even more so than the men as well. They can have great matches and be something that both men and women want to see. They don’t have to be this novelty. So to see this happening and watching the women get recognized while putting on these awesome matches is really exciting as a fan of wrestling and a fan of women’s wrestling.
As much as she would be a welcome addition to the current roster of female performers, Torres goes on to say that returning to WWE just wouldn’t be compatible with the direction her life has gone. While she’s happy with motherhood, Jiu Jitsu, and film and television projects, it’s more than a little heartbreaking to recognize how much deserving women on the cusp of the so-called revolution missed out on:
I know how much it means to them because I know how much it would have meant to me at the time.
Thankfully we’re pretty sure the door is always open should she change her mind. Cocky heel veteran Eve tearing up these NXT youngins then triangle-choking them out? Yes please.
