Rey Mysterio Made A Surprise Return To WWE At The Royal Rumble

WWE Network

WWE’s 2018 Royal Rumble featured a number of surprise entrants including NXT’s Champion Andrade ‘Cien’ Almas, Adam Cole and even THE HURRICANE, but none were as big or impactful as former WWE and World Heavyweight Champion Rey Mysterio (Jr.).

Rey entered in the prized #27 spot, surprising the announce team with how good he looks, presumably because they didn’t watch season three of Lucha Underground. He was eventually eliminated by Finn Bálor. Mysterio is an absolute legend, holding championships all around the world and helping bring the high-flying lucha libre style of wrestling to the United States in ECW and WCW in the 1990s.

Check out the surprise return of the one of the best ever below:

Mysterio previously entered WWE in all the way back in 2002, where he remained for nearly 13 years. He left the company amidst controversy in 2015, and has spent the past three years competing on the independent circuit, returning to lucha libre glory in AAA, and appearing as the mentor of El Dragon Azteca Jr. (and Prince Puma, sort of) in Lucha Underground. Mysterio was last seen on television being carried to a dark cage by The Monster Matanza Cueto where everyone assumed he’d be eaten. In the world of Lucha Underground, maybe he was?
