John Cena Is Officially Joining ‘Fast & Furious 9,’ Possibly Replacing The Rock

Per an announcement from Deadline by way of Universal, John Cena has officially joined the cast of the upcoming Fast & Furious 9. We’re assuming it’ll get a humorous title upgrade between now and its expected release date of May 22, 2020. I’m personally hoping for, And 9.

It’ll be the ninth installment for the Fast series, but unfortunately not “thrice in a lifetime” for any WWE fans hoping to see Cena go one-on-one with The Rock again, as Deadline mentions Dwayne Johnson isn’t expected to return for the film.

The announcement:

Vin Diesel teased about John Cena’s casting in the ninth installment of Fast & Furious back in April on Instagram, and Universal officially confirmed today that the Blockers actor is a lock.

Cena’s character is under wraps, the only word coming to us is that he plays ‘a badass’. Dwayne Johnson, we hear, will not be in Fast & Furious 9. Dan Casey is writing the screenplay from a story by Justin Lin. Production starts later this month for a May 22, 2020 release.

Cena has previously flexed his action movie chops in WWE Studios films like The Marine and 12 Rounds before being cast in major Hollywood franchises like Bumblebee and the upcoming Suicide Squad sequel-slash-reboot. For anyone not familiar with Cena’s well-documented love of cars, check out his entrance for WrestleMania 23 below.

Let’s hope Cena’s character sticks around long enough to run into The Rock and Roman Reigns, by way of the Fast & Furious extended universe.
