It’s probably no secret by now that the With Spandex family loves Lucha Underground. We love dragons and death-licks, we love Alberto El Patrón finding his smile again, and we love Sexy Star telling the patriarchy to take the longest possible walk off the shortest possible pier. It’s an incredibly dense hour of the good things about wrestling. Now, thanks to their commentator Vampiro, we can add Actual Real-Life Heroism to that list of good things.
Vampiro was at a McDonald’s in Thunder Bay, Ontario on Saturday when he saw a man convulsing on the floor of the restaurant. He called 911 and stayed with the man until paramedics arrived at the scene shortly after. Luckily, the man was okay after receiving treatment. TMZ picked up on the story on Sunday, and Vampiro added that he was just happy to help out. He also posted a few pictures on Facebook, saying that he was “so proud of the paramedics in Thunder Bay.”
This was definitely a case of being in the right place at the right time, but there’s a little more to it than that. Vampiro is a member of the Guardian Angels, an international citizen crime patrol originally established in 1979 to watch over New York City subways. The photo you see above is actually from the official Facebook page of their Canadian branch. In 2007, it was Vampiro himself who started a chapter of the Guardian Angels in Mexico City. Believe it or not, the day before the McDonald’s incident, Vampiro (referred to in this article by his real name, Ian Hodgkinson) was with the Thunder Bay chapter, patrolling the streets and alerting the police to various situations. Honestly, I had no idea that this community watchdog side of him existed until this weekend. If your name is Dario Cueto, and you just so happen to be reading this, I think one of your commentators is in line for a raise, and it’s not the one who name-drops Hiroshi Tanahashi every time someone does a sling blade.
