After some rumblings that the role would go to The Help’s Jessica Chastain, it was announced yesterday that Naomi Watts will be playing Princess Diana in the upcoming biopic Caught in Flight. From The Hollywood Reporter:
Billed as a compelling portrait of Diana, Princess of Wales during the last two years of her life, the script charts her search for personal happiness as she turned into a major international campaigner and humanitarian.
Watts, who will next be seen starring in The Impossible opposite Ewan McGregor, described her casting as “an honour to be able to play this iconic role – Princess Diana was loved across the world, and I look forward to rising to the challenge of playing her on screen.”
I guess I’m supposed to have an opinion on this, so here goes: this movie is going to win 500 Oscars. Easy. Like, for categories that don’t even exist yet. They’ll just make up new ones on the fly and give them to people involved with this movie two at a time. (“And the Oscar for Best… uh, Blonde Lady goes to… NAOMI WATTS!”) If there’s one thing the Academy loves, it’s giving awards to movies where white people portray humanitarians and/or famous British figures, and Princess Diana is the absolute gold standard for that. They’ll need to back a truck right down the goddamn red carpet to carry out all their hardware.
Armond White will despise this movie.
