If you think you can escape the Colin Kaepernick-National Anthem controversy by popping in your copy of Madden 17 and knocking out a few games, well, you’re wrong — there is clearly no escaping this controversy.
As GameSpot reports, a new update to Madden will feature the commentary team of Brandon Gaudin and Charles Davis discussing the situation with Kaepernick and his refusal to stand for the National Anthem. An EA Sports senior publicist confirmed the update to GameSpot, saying, “Kaepernick’s decision will be briefly mentioned in-game, reflecting our commitment to authenticity in Madden NFL 17.”
EA has been touting an enhanced commentary system in the game for some time now. Uproxx’s Jason Nawara didn’t notice any significant upgrades in our review of the game, but this could be a sign of the future and of EA’s commitment to constantly maintaining timely commentary in the Madden franchise.
“Overall, our new commentary will mainly center around on-field performance, as well as major news like trades, free agency signings, and injuries,” the publicist told GameSpot. As of now, most updates to the commentary have been to make note of players’ performance in preseason and not much beyond that.
On one hand, the realism is appreciated. Kaepernick’s decision not to stand for the National Anthem before a preseason game has ruled airwaves and the internet all week and is clearly on the minds of football fans. But at the same time, there are more important things for EA to fix in this year’s iteration of the franchise. Like all those wild glitches.
