The Southern University and A&M College’s marching band, The Human Jukebox, is known as one of the top marching bands in the country. They’ve performed at the Super Bowl six times and were even chosen by Floyd Mayweather to play during his “grand arrival” prior to his “Fight of the Century” match with Manny Pacquiao. So you know they’re going to do right by a song when they cover it live, like they have with Adele, The Weeknd, Future and so many more.
On Saturday, The Human Jukebox decided to cover Drake’s smash hit, “Controlla,” during Southern’s big football game against Tulane University and, of course, it’s a must-watch. The brass — particularly the horns — kick it off by adding a ton of energy to the subdued original, but the party really gets started when the percussion kicks in and Southern University’s Fabulous Dancing Dolls stand up to begin their fierce choreographed routine. It’s easy to see why Beyoncé chose several of the Dolls to appear in the Lemonade short film.
It’s a little difficult to imagine Drake bopping along to this version of “Controlla,” though, because his go-go version of “One Dance” wasn’t the rousing success he’d probably hoped for, but maybe he just needs another shot at rhyming over horns.
