If it wasn’t clear over the summer, it’s pretty clear now. People aren’t going to stop talking about Kevin Durant being on the Warriors. And they’re especially not going to stop asking Russell Westbrook about it.
As with most things Westbrook related, his response is unpredictable, even from moment to moment. But thus far, he’s shown a lot of tact and resilience to continue being bothered about a player who is no longer on his team and is now on the team that his team blew a 3-1 lead in the Western Conference Finals against.
It’s the old situation of being told by a friend to move on from a relationship, but having said friend consistently bring up your ex whenever he or she has the chance. Of course that’s going to make it harder to move on.
Westbrook was recently asked about comments Durant made where he called the Golden State Warriors players “selfless” and that they “enjoy the game in its purest form.” Russ responded in perfectly-executed Russ fashion:
“That’s cute, man,” Westbrook said. “That’s cute. My job is to worry about what’s going on here, and we’re gonna worry about all the selfish guys we have here apparently. We’re going to figure that out.”
There was a follow-up question where Westbrook was asked if it’s hard not to take everything Durant says as a shot at the Thunder (because of course it’s going to be hard seeing as someone will find a way to mention any word Durant says to Westbrook in some fashion).
“I don’t care,” he said. “To me it doesn’t matter. My job is to worry about here. Honestly I’m really tired of talking about it. Anytime anybody asks me another question I’m not going to answer.”
We’ll see if that’s the case. Because Westbrook is going to be asked plenty of questions about it over the course of the season. Whether we’re all tired of it — Russ included — or not.
