‘Avengers 2’ officially set for May 1, 2015

After “The Avengers” stomped allover the worldwide box office this summer, a sequel was announced almost instantly, but fans were left wondering when that sequel might actually see the light of day.

We’ve been hearing rumors that Marvel Studios and Disney had set a date for the sequel, but now it’s official: The as-of-now untitled “The Avengers” sequel will fly into theaters May 1, 2015.

As previously announced, Joss Whedon is returning to write and direct the sequel, which will naturally feature all your favorite Marvel heroes, including Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) and Captain America (Chris Evans). Other Marvel characters are likely to appear in the film as well.

Although pre-production planning is no doubt underway, Marvel won’t be able to focus on the project until, they get through a slew of upcoming films, including “Avengers”-related titles such as “Iron Man 3” (currently undergoing a production delay), and the upcoming “Thor: The Dark World” and “Captain America: Winter Soldier.”

“The Avengers” currently stands as the third highest grossing film of all time (behind James Cameron’s twofer, “Titanic” and “Avatar”).
