The question of whether the Pixies will carry on without original bassist Kim Deal has been answered loud and clear.
Deal — also a founding member of The Breeders — announced her departure from the group just a few weeks ago. The remaining Pixies surprised fans early this morning by releasing a brand new song called “Bagboy,” along with a colorfully destructive video.
When the influential college rock band — featuring Black Francis, Deal, David Lovering and Joey Santiago — reunited in 2004 after a decade apart, they concentrated on touring and largely steered clear of the studio. The last original song the band released was the Deal-penned “Bam Thwok” in 2004.
The eccentric “Bagboy” initially sounds quite different from their earlier recordings, and more akin to some of Francis’ most recent solo work (he releases albums under the name Frank Black and comprises one-half of the groups Grand Duchy with his wife). Francis talk-sings over an ominous beat that could even be classified as “dancey,” with frequent Black collaborator Jeremy Dubs filling in on bass. Soon, Santiago’s distinctive guitar leads break through the heavy din and some backing vocals kick in. They sure sound like Deal but are reportedly provided by the boys in the band.

Pixies played their last shows together in 2011. A new album has long been rumored, and “Bagboy” could be the first step in that direction, although nothing’s been announced.
According to Pitchfork, the Gil Norton-produced “Bagboy” was recorded last October, meaning Deal has been out of the band all this time, but it wasn’t announced until recently. Must be a rock star thing.
