Based on the best-selling book series of the same name, Goosebumps stars Jack Black as author R.L. Stine, who keeps his daughter (played by someone who isn’t Alex from Modern Family, but looks like Alex from Modern Family) and his manuscripts locked up in his house. One night, some horny teens, including Jack’s son on Lost, break into their home and let loose all the monsters in Stine’s books, Jumanji-style. There’s Slappy the Dummy and the Abominable Snowman of Pasadena, as well as some lawn gnomes, truly the most horrible creature of all.
It’s the ultimate nostalgia move: a film based on SOMETHING ONLY ’90S KIDS UNDERSTAND with a premise that strongly resembles a movie ONLY ’90 KIDS APPRECIATE. Couple that with being released around Halloween (and a script penned by the writers of, um, Screwed), and R.L. Stine is getting goosebumps thinking about all the money he’s about to make.
