It’s still pretty early in the evening but tonight is already going surprisingly well for The Late Late Show With James Corden. This evening at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards — a precursor to next week’s Primetime Emmys for weirder, more obscure features like animation, longform videos and commercials — Corden and co. nabbed their second award of the year.
That first one, which was announced yesterday, was for Interactive Program. The second award though, is a bit more unexpected, given the competition in the category included major pop players like Adele and Beyonce.
In particular, Lemonade was tipped to win the award for Variety Special, given it is one of the most critically acclaimed and impactful videos of the year, and also given she just won eight VMAs for her work on the album and became the most decorated VMA winner to date.
So yes, in a way, Corden’s show beat the popstars at their own game, besting both Adele’s Adele in New York City, Lemonade (and also Amy Schumer’s Amy Schumer: Live at the Apollo) to nab that award. According to Deadline, the team behind the show were joking about being as stunned as anyone else that they won. (Let the word spread to the Beyhive that they’re aware this is an upset.)
This is getting crazy now!!!!!! 2 Emmys in 2 days! https://t.co/l0vhkMoNV6

Still, the team behind The Late Late Show has plenty of reason to be proud. Adele’s Carpool Karoake episode just broke a Late Night Youtube record, and Beyonce is sure to clean up at The Grammys anyway. In the meantime, could we maybe get a Carpool Karaoke from King B? Pretty please??
