Hillary Clinton has taken a lot of heat for her “basket of deplorables” remark at a fundraiser last week, and while it may have been a less than tactful way for a candidate to generalize her opponent’s supporters, many are pointing out that, well, she wasn’t entirely wrong. Take this incident that happened at a Trump rally in Asheville, North Carolina on Monday.
Police have issued a warrant for Richard Campbell of Edisto Island, South Carolina, accused of punching 69-year-old Shirley Teter in the face, who was protesting outside of the rally. Teter, who once protested the Vietnam War, later told reporters that the reason she still protests at her age is because she “ran into another situation that was sickening [her] heart.” At first she says she was just having some fun with the Trump supporters, but it didn’t take long for things to escalate.
“Whenever groups of them would start chanting ‘Trump! Trump! Trump! Trump!’ I would chant back, ‘Dump! Dump! Dump! Dump!’ It was kind of comical,” Teter said.
After the rally, Teter experienced something she had never seen in all of her protests. Peace teetered over into something else.
“I said, ‘You better learn to speak Russian,’ and I said, ‘The first two words are going to be ha ha.’ He stopped in his tracks, and he turned around and just cold-cocked me,” Teter said.
Teter fell on her oxygen tank after being hit, which she needs to use following a recent surgery. She also has sore ribs from the assault, as well as a sore jaw and a cut on her elbow.
As of Tuesday evening, Campbell had not yet been arrested by police, but as the spunky Teter says, “You better arrest that son of a bitch!”
