John Cena may not be able to wrestle, but he’s still keeping that relationship with the moms of middle America going strong. Cena kicked off his week by co-hosting Today, and tackling important subjects like whether or not he wears jammies to bed (if you haven’t gotten a text from your mom about it, he doesn’t, fyi), and being polite to Olympia Dukakis in a segment that would make even the most shriveled of Today viewers’ ovaries spark to life.
All jokes aside, however, it’s not a John Cena appearance without him doing something amazing for a kid who’s suffered some sort of tragedy. Via Today:
While this has been the hardest year of Chris Singleton’s life, a trio of Yankees and wrestling star John Cena helped put a smile on his face Monday with a great surprise on TODAY to kick off the baseball team’s annual Hope Week.
Singleton has been a symbol of strength and hope since losing his mother, Sharonda Coleman-Singleton, 45, who was one of nine parishioners murdered in the shootings on June 17 at Emanuel A.M.E. Church in Charleston, South Carolina.
“When something like this happens, you never think it would happen to you, so I think everybody praying for me has allowed me to be this strong,” Singleton told Tamron Hall and Cena on TODAY’s Take.
Brett Gardner, Dellin Betances, and Alex Rodriguez invited Singleton to throw out the first pitch at Monday’s game against the Minnesota Twins. The invitation comes as part of Hope Week, wherein every day, the Yankees highlight a different inspirational person, family, or organisation.
While Cena may never unseat my favorite WWE-Today appearance, kudos to him for not taking a break from making something special happen in someone’s life.
