For many, seeing Sting wrestling in a WWE ring was an incredible and surreal experience. Sting was considered by many to be the last great “get” for Vince McMahon, given that he held out for so long. For others, he was the last great hero standing up against the monopoly that destroyed the territories and is constantly retconning the entire history of wrestling.
So, what now?
The biggest chatter that’s been generated is the apparent signing of Samoa Joe. WWE has a long, often ignored history of only signing from one (albeit gigantic) Samoan family, and passing on others regardless of their talent. While Joe may have lazed his way through the majority of his TNA career, most people still look at him as the top-tier talent who never really got his shot. The legacy he built in ROH was so strong that it doesn’t matter what he did or didn’t do in TNA. Rumours have ranged from him already being signed, to him only being in talks with WWE starting this week, but the excitement at the idea of seeing Joe show up in NXT is palpable.
But who else?
Obviously, my answer will always be Evie (the insanely talented and lovely super-athlete from New Zealand), but if I thought long and hard, my answers are pretty predictable. I’ve been talking about how Uhaa Nation should’ve already been signed to a major company for years, and despite the overwhelming issues with how WWE treats their POC workers, I’m over the moon that other people will finally get to see what makes this guy so damn special.
This still leaves a wealth of great workers out there. If Adam Cole has already signed, do you want the Young Bucks to superkick their way to a Mt. Rushmore reunion in NXT? Do you hope all this UFC jazz is the longest con possible, and CM Punk will magically reappear with A.J. in tow, ready to take down the Authority and usher in a new age of professional wrestling? Do you think EC3’s shitty cousin Derrick Bateman didn’t die in a fire, and he’s somewhere watching an Indians game in Old Glory Zubaz, just waiting to make his triumphant return?
