Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. The Rock at WrestleMania X-7 is the greatest sports entertainment match of all time. Yes, there are better wrestling matches: Flair vs. Steamboat, Joe vs. Kobashi, blah blah blah. But as far as the all-encompassing sports entertainment genre where superstar appeal, atmosphere, storyline and match quality all bone each other to make a perfect baby? It doesn’t get better than this match. (Cena/Punk at MITB 2011 is a close second if you’re keeping score.)
Here we have two of the four most popular wrestlers ever in their primes having a near-perfect match that’s introduced by Limp Bizkit for chrissakes. And I don’t care what happened the next night on RAW or what happened during the Invasion angle; for one night Austin joining McMahon was the craziest sh*t ever.
Austin decided to revisit the match on his podcast (which you should be listening to every week), giving us the behind-the-scenes look at the psychology, moments and ways he could have improved an already five star classic. It’s probably one of his best episodes to date and I hope he keeps it up with other matches (Three Stages of Hell next, por favor). Bonus points for him ragging the way guys look at the refs to time their kick outs as that’s a pet peeve of mine, too. Anyway, take a listen and have a swig for the working man.
