Tyson Kidd’s Neck Injury Is Worse Than Reported, Came Dangerously Close To Being Fatal

Last month, Tyson Kidd suffered a neck injury while wrestling a dark match with Samoa Joe. The injury was no laughing matter, putting Tyson on the shelf for more than a year, and requiring surgery that will leave a pretty nasty scar, but it turns out the injury was even more serious than we thought. “Would have killed the vast majority people” kind of serious.

A couple days ago, Kidd tweeted an X-ray of his neck, which is now held together with a rod and four screws, and a rather startling stat. According to Kidd, only 5 percent of people survive his injury…

Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer confirmed what Kidd said. According to sources close to the situation, Tyson was told by doctors that he was very lucky to be alive. Kidd only survived the injury because the break was high in his neck, and his beefy pro-wrestler neck muscles basically held everything together. Somebody who wasn’t such a well-honed athlete would have been in much worse shape.

So, Kidd being out for at least 14 months and having four screws in his neck is actually a best-case scenario. Hopefully he continues to beat the odds by making a healthy return to the ring.
