It was announced on Monday that WWE is bringing back Starrcade. What? Yes, really … they are. Sort of. At least they are if you happen to live in Greensboro, North Carolina because while Starrcade is returning, it only appears to be a WWE Smackdown house show at this point.
The news was announced by the social media accounts of the Greenboro Coliseum, which is where the first Starrcade took place in 1983. That show was put on by Jim Crockett Promotions and the National Wrestling Alliance. The event is set to take place on Saturday, November 25th. Survivor Series takes place in Houston six days earlier on Sunday, November 19 as well.
The Greensboro Coliseum Twitter account posted the full lineup that features a double Steel Cage match main event with Jinder Mahal defending the WWE Title against Shinsuke Nakamura in one Steel Cage Match and Natalya defending the Smackdown Women’s Championship against Charlotte Flair in another Steel Cage Match. Of course, both of those matches could change in the next two months depending on who is carrying what title. Here’s the full lineup.

(Side note: Bobby Roode and Ricky Steamboat’s names are spelled wrong on there. Oops!)
See those names at the bottom? Ricky Steamboat and the Rock ‘N’ Roll Express are also scheduled to appear, which is a nice nod to the history of the event. There will likely be some older fans in attendance that will love seeing Steamboat there along with Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson.
The Hardy Boyz are on Raw, but WWE has likely included them because they are from North Carolina. They should help ticket sales. There’s also a WWE.com page about Starrcade that should provide more info for the event in the coming days.
For now, it’s just a house show, but this is one of those events that would make for a good WWE Network special on a Saturday night. When WWE launched the WWE Network three years they said they would do more of those types of events. Sadly, the last one was over a year ago at Roadblock in March 2016 (awesome Triple H vs. Ambrose match at that show), so they may not be filming this one. That could change, though. I hope it does.
The last WCW Starrcade event was in 2000 and featured a main event of Scott Steiner successfully defending the WCW Championship against Sid Vicious. That show took place on December 17,2000 and the company died three months later in March 2001 when WWE bought them out.
Regarding the Starrcade name, I always felt like WWE should have used some of the old WCW PPV names for their own PPVs. They have used the Great American Bash and Clash of the Champions (WWE removes “the” from it), but I thought Starrcade and Halloween Havoc are two more names they should use regularly. It’s good to see WWE using it finally after all these years even though it’s only for the local fans.
According to WWE.com, will be available starting Friday, Sept. 29, at 10 AM ET at Ticketmaster.
