Big E Wants Sasha Banks In The New Day, And Other Highlights From His Sports Illustrated Interview

For years, Big E fell into the classic WWE trap, where a guy is never given anything interesting to say or do, and then, shockingly, gets branded as boring. Despite being a physical specimen, and secretly one of the funniest guys in the company, Big E’s WWE career hit a wall. Thankfully, The New Day happened, and now Big E is one of the most unhinged, inspired, kazoo-eating forces on WWE TV.

Sports Illustrated recently sat down with Big E to ask him about finding his way in the WWE, and a few other appropriately wacky subjects. First up, was Big E ever discouraged during his directionless period?

“I was extremely discouraged. You get to the point where you’re off TV and you look at the landscape around you and you’re like ‘Woah there’s not a lot for me,’ and it doesn’t turn around for a lot of guys like it has for us. We spent a lot of time working on this, and I think some younger people don’t understand how much work we put in. There are plenty of instances of ‘Oh this thing is dead in the water,’ or ‘Oh this thing is never going to work,’ but we were fortunate enough to persevere and get it off the ground. That’s the key. Sink or swim, we believed so much in this idea.”

Big E is finally getting to tap into his humorous side, but not everybody is so lucky. Who does Big E identify as WWE’s most underappreciated funnyguys?

“I might go with Jimmy Uso. R-Truth is also pretty funny. Heath Slater. Well, Heath Slater is unintentionally funny.”

Now, I’m not sure why this question was asked, maybe it was that early run where Big E kept making guys bleed from the mouth, but he was asked who the “toughest guys to work with” are. Hey, it’s an interesting question.

“Sheamus has a reputation for being a little stiff. I’d say Sheamus and Titus O’Neil. Titus O’Neil can mess you up! You gotta protect yourself with Titus!”

Finally, if The New Day were to add a fourth member, who would it be? I think we can all predict the answer to this one…

“Sasha Banks, no question. She’s probably my favorite wrestler on the planet right now. The stuff she’s done with Bayley have been tremendous, both at Takeover: Brooklyn and the Iron Man Match. We’ve got a lot of respect for her, she’s on another level.”
