Cody Rhodes Is Conflicted About Whether He’ll Ever Return To WWE

Since leaving WWE, Cody Rhodes has been pretty much everywhere, wrestling anyone and everyone he can. He’s now the newest member of the Bullet Club in New Japan, he’s joined Ring of Honor, and he’s been capturing singles titles in several promotions, including Global Force Wrestling’s Nex*Gen Championship.

But a lot of fans are assuming that Cody [Redacted] will eventually wind up back in WWE. He’s still very young, and he’s only making a bigger name for himself and earning a reputation and pedigree that grows with each promotion he visits and accolade he earns.

In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Cody revealed that the answer about what he’d do if WWE came calling again isn’t so cut and dry. And as you’d expect, it may end up being entirely situational. As he explains:

I don’t know the full answer as to where I’m going. I wish I knew. My wife asked me the other day, “What if they called you and said, ‘Come back at the Royal Rumble’?” I said, “No, I don’t think I’d be interested in that.” She said, “What if they said, ‘Come back at the Royal Rumble, and make it about you and Triple H and head to WrestleMania with that’?” And then my answer really changed. Maybe in my heart, the end game is to go back to WWE, but it’s definitely not in the forefront of my mind. Each time I go out there, I find out a little bit more about where I’m ultimately happy being.

I think people who say, “I’m never going back to WWE,” I don’t understand that. I had a lot of gripes, and those are things that I’d be a hypocrite if I went back and didn’t try to make right. But I think it’s silly when people say never, unless you’ve been burned that bad. I really can’t even say I’ve been burned at all.

I don’t think it’s likely that Cody will be back at the Royal Rumble to build to a WrestleMania match against Triple H. But it’s possible WWE will come calling at some point with an offer that’s too good for the son of the son of a plumber to pass up. For now, he’ll just have to content himself with being one of the most in-demand acts on the independent scene. Life’s certainly better for Cody at the moment than it was for Stardust earlier this year.
