After Tuesday’s gun control speech from a weeping President Obama, the political world is aflutter with the implications. The ins-and-outs of the measures reveal that the laws largely target gun control procedures, improved technology, and mental health provisions. Obama stressed that he has no intentions of intruding upon the Second Amendment, but the gun brigade still feels apprehensive about what the plan means for them.
Earlier on Tuesday, an NRA publication made waves by tweeting a photo of bullets next to politicians who favored gun control. The menacing image caused unease, and now the NRA itself is speaking about Obama’s measures. The organization is predictably disgusted with the executive plan, and they accuse him of favoring words over solutions:
Once again, President Obama has chosen to engage in political rhetoric, instead of offering meaningful solutions to our nation’s pressing problems. Today’s event also represents an ongoing attempt to distract attention away from his lack of a coherent strategy to keep the American people safe from terrorist attack.
The American people do not need more emotional, condescending lectures that are completely devoid of facts. The men and women of the National Rifle Association take a back seat to no one when it comes to keeping our communities safe. But the fact is that President Obama’s proposals would not have prevented any of the horrific events he mentioned. The timing of this announcement, in the eighth and final year of his presidency, demonstrates not only political exploitation but a fundamental lack of seriousness.
The statement also expresses disbelief that Obama will guard the Second Amendment. The NRA sees this new plan as a way for Obama to “scapegoat” guns; and the group accuses Obama of using his last year in office to erase the effects of “failed policies” (by trampling on citizen’s rights). The letter ends with a pledge to defend gun owners’ rights, but none of this is surprising. The NRA would never be pleased by any level of increased gun control.
