Late Night host Seth Meyers has been on a political roll this week. First, a segment dedicated to Donald Trump’s birtherism lies went viral Monday night and Tuesday morning. Meyers followed this with a piece concerning the Chelsea bombings’ politicization, especially by Trump, Hillary Clinton and the news media. Both were hugely popular, thereby giving credence to the belief that Meyers’ program is one of the (if not the) true heirs to Jon Stewarts’ Daily Show legacy. As further proof of this, Late Night tackled recent revelations about Trump’s alleged misuse of Trump Foundation money.
Specifically, he covered the Washington Post‘s discovery of at least $258,000 Trump took from his charitable nonprofit’s funds and applied to personal matters, like a lawsuit concerning a flagpole’s size. The Trump campaign’s response to the contrary in the article gave Meyers an epiphany:
“[Trump’s] like a carny working the ring toss at a state fair. There’s a reason Donald Trump Foundation is abbreviated ‘DTF,’ because it is down to F you over.”
Like belatedly realizing Neo’s name is an anagram for “One” in The Matrix (and feeling like an idiot forever because of it), Meyers’ pointing out this possible Trump Foundation abbreviation seems silly. Yet considering everything Washington Post reported David A. Fahrenthold turned up, and that the organization is currently under investigation by the New York Attorney General’s office, it isn’t silly at all.
In fact, it’s downright appropriate — just like the Late Night team’s photoshop of Trump as a ring toss-operating carny.
