Earlier today Cajun Boy introduced us to the viral new Tumblr site This Guy Has My Macbook by interaction designer Joshua Kaufman. After his Macbook was stolen, the tech-savvy Kaufman spied on his thief using the Hidden app he had wisely installed. The police told him they didn’t have the resources to track the thief, even with the software doing the work for them, so Kaufman started the Tumblr and posted screencaps from Hidden on the internet.
Internet justice can be swift — and not always insanely disproportionate — because the viral spread of the Tumblr site seems to have changed the Oakland PD’s minds. Kaufman just posted on Twitter earlier this hour that the Oakland police have arrested the alleged Macbook thief:
11:33 PM est — “The police used my evidence (email which pointed to a cab service) that he was a driver and tricked him into picking them up. Nice work OPD!” [Twitter]
11:37 PM est — “ARRESTED! An Oakland police officer just called me to let me know that they arrested the guy in my photos! BOOYA!” [Twitter]
11:47 PM est — “Sorry folks, the MacBook isn’t currently on and/or connected to the Internet so I can’t provide any photos of what’s happening *right now*.” [Twitter]
Oh sweet Jesus, this schedenfreude is delicious.
