Martin Scorsese”s film based on the novel Silence by Japanese author Shusaku Endo is now set for an awards-qualifying December 23 limited release before expanding to more theaters in January.
The film is a passion project for Scorsese – he”s wanted to make it since 1991. Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver play two young Portuguese priests who are persecuted when they”re on a missionary trip to Japan during the 17th century. Liam Neeson plays their mentor. (Yes, it”s a reprise of sorts of the role in one of his earliest successes, The Mission, when he also played a Jesuit priest.)
