Last month, rumors began swirling about WWE trying to get Shawn Michaels back in action for one more big match, possibly to make sure they sell out the Royal Rumble at the Alamodome. AJ Styles latched on to this and fanned the flames of those rumors, campaigning hard to be the man to face Michaels, should that comeback match come to pass.
BUT WAIT. A new challenger approaches! During an appearance on the Gorilla Position Podcast last week, Seth Rollins threw his hat in the ring to take on the Heartbreak Kid … and is willing to throw hands with Styles if he has to to get that match. (Transcript via The Sun.)
“If he’s ever coming out of retirement it better be at WrestleMania. Kudos to AJ for giving it a shot but he can take a backseat. I would like that match before he gets his hands on Shawn. A lot of people would pay good money to see Shawn and AJ.
“Me and AJ might have to fight it out. Winner gets Shawn.”
Why does Rollins think he deserves it more? Because Michaels is the man he patterned his entire wrestling style after. (You know, like pretty much every other wrestler his age.)
“I’ve always fancied myself as the guy who can do it all pretty well. I don’t see myself in the ring as a high flyer or brawler or technical guy, but I feel I can do everything, work with everybody, and bring out the best in different people.
“I would never compare myself to him, but like a Shawn Michaels, a guy who can do everything. I’ve always prided myself on doing different types of matches with different opponents.”
The best part about all of this is that there’s only a very slim chance Michaels is going to come back and wrestle another match, period. But it’s still fun to watch two of the top wrestlers in the company get in a pissing match about who “deserves” the shot against HBK more.
So I guess let’s just wait, because any second, Ryback is going to release a podcast where he talk about how he almost talked Vince McMahon into letting him headline WrestleMania against Michaels once. It totally happened, you guys. His uncle works for Nintendo.
