Public-relations specialist Stephanie Cegielski signed on as Communications Director of the Make America Great Again Super PAC for Donald Trump last summer. Like many conservatives, she was feeling disenfranchised and unimpressed with Jeb Bush and the other potential presidential candidates, and as a result “fell in love with the idea of the protest candidate who was not bought by corporations.”
But after working on Trump’s campaign for the better part of a year, Cegielski has come to realize that she made a huge mistake backing Trump, and now wants to help undo the damage she caused by backing him as president. In an open letter to xoJane, Cegielski writes that “President Trump would be President Sanjaya in terms of legitimacy and authority.”
Cegielski paints a terrifying picture of an egomaniac out of control, who won’t own up to mistakes and thinks that he and he alone can somehow solve the world’s problems, like some sort of deranged superhero. One point she drives home over and over again is something many have long-since suspected: Trump never wanted to be president.
She writes that his campaign was initially positioned as a protest campaign, and that neither Trump nor his team expected to amass more than 12 percent of the vote. One thing they underestimated was public anger, however, which is how we got to where we are today. The entire piece is well worth reading and sharing, but her plea to Trump supporters is as follows:
You can give Trump the biggest gift possible if you are a Trump supporter: Stop supporting him.
He doesn’t want the White House. He just wants to be able to say that he could have run the White House. He’s achieved that already and then some. If there is any question, take it from someone who was recruited to help the candidate succeed, and initially very much wanted him to do so.
The hard truth is: Trump only cares about Trump.
And if you are one of the disaffected voters — one of the silent majority like me — who wanted a candidate who could be your voice, I want to speak directly to you as one of his biggest advocates and supporters.
He is not that voice. He is not your voice. He is only Trump’s voice.
Trump is constantly pointing the finger at his “unfair” and “biased” opponents, but few were closer to the candidate than Cegielski herself. But it’s unknown if her words will reach the ears she’s intending, or more importantly, if they will actually listen.
