While United ruled most of Monday with their controversy, Tuesday seemed to land back in familiar territory thanks to Trump Press Secretary Sean Spicer. He once again braved the press corps and ended up saying something that seems to have more than one group looking for his head. While Spicer’s job is to spin, inform, and defend the administration’s many positions, this time around he decided to drop Hitler into the mix and confuse mostly everybody.
While discussing the strike against Syria and President Bashar al-Assad’s chemical attack, Spicer brought up the former Nazi leader in an attempt to make a point, saying that Hitler never used chemical weapons. He was immediately fact-checked by MSNBC and proceeded to attempt to clarify what he meant several times. Spicer apologized for his comments, but Jimmy Kimmel had a little fun with the entire thing by giving us a look inside the mind of “Sporty Spicer.”
It would seem that Spicer just couldn’t stop himself despite the clear indications that he was taking a road that Robert Frost wouldn’t dare look at. I don’t know if I would call it a full defense of Hitler, at least not in the way Kimmel does, but it is never a good idea to bring up Hitler in this manner. It’s probably a good idea to never bring up Hitler at all unless you’re in a history class or at your local “Hitler was bad” meeting. You don’t have to go to such lengths to describe the nastiness of using chemical weapons. They’re pretty heinous by themselves.
