New York activists are still calling for officials to release misconduct filings for the Officer Daniel Pantaleo, who placed Eric Garner in the chokehold that resulted in his 2014 death. Meanwhile, Politico did some related digging and found that the officer’s earnings have reportedly been increasing, and his overtime has also seen a bump since the 2014 incident.
Pantaleo is reported to have earned $119,996 in the 2016 fiscal year. His base pay was $78,026 with $23,220 in overtime. He has seen a 35 percent bump in overtime pay and a 14 percent jump in his overall earnings since fiscal year 2015. The year following Garner’s death also saw a similar bump. Controversy surrounded Pantaleo after Garner’s death after it was determined he wasn’t going to face an indictment for the incident.
While he didn’t face indictment, Pantaleo was stripped of his badge and gun after Garner’s death and was then placed on a modified assignment. NYPD spokesman John Grimpel told Politico how Pantaleo had worked extra hours on the beat, but didn’t give any further comment on what his extra work was. Grimpel simply said, “At times, officers are required to work beyond their scheduled tour of duty. This includes officers on modified assignment.”
