“THIS IS JUST A TEST,” reads the description of ASAP Rocky‘s latest Soundcloud release, “Above.” There is no indication what exactly Rocky is testing, but he does seem to be trying out a more melodic approach.
The ASAP Mob/AWGE frontman seems to be searching for inspiration in unlikely sounds, as he often has in the past, crooning that he’s “slowly losing focus” and feeling like “the walls are closing in” on the slow-burning, vaguely industrial-sounding production from Frans Mernick, who also produced Rocky’s last loose single, “5ive $tars.” The description for the previous track also read “TESTING COMING SOON,” which could indicate that he’s building up to something.
In the meantime, it seems Rocky has plenty to do, as he recently announced a revamped AWGE site complete with new merchandise and the AWGE Vol. 2 DVD from which peripheral ASAP Mob member Playboi Carti took his own new single with Lil Uzi Vert. Rocky has also been working on his partnership with Under Armour bringing community centers to underserved neighborhoods and stacking up his money for a rainy day. He’s also busy performing with the rest of the Mob, although their recent Yams day concert was shut down early due to backstage brawiling.
