Lil Wayne was once the master of adding his own contributions to other people’s hit songs. He’s fallen off quite a bit since his heady and hyper-productive mixtape run but the verse he just added to Gucci Mane and Drake’s “Both” shows a glimmer of that old Tunechi. On the track, Lil Wayne discusses everything from his beef with Cash Money head and his former mentor Birdman to Get Out.
Hitting on his ongoing struggles with his long-time label, Weezy says that he “should have left with Juvie,” referencing Juvenile’s exit from the label in 2001 over money problems. Though the track does switch into “trust no one” mode for a while, it’s not all moody ruminations on failing friendships. Wayne manages to throw out some Grade A boasts like “heard them boys gon’ write me off, hope they also writing wills.” On the whole, his verse is a reminder that Weezy isn’t going anywhere any time soon, even if his label keeps trying to keep him silent.
The remix comes ahead of Gucci Mane’s performance at Coachella, which is a thing that’s really happening.
