“The future belongs to those who know where they belong.”
So says Erudite leader Jeanine Matthews (Kate Winslet) in the brand-new teaser trailer for “Divergent,” the forthcoming YA adaptation that hopes to capture the same audience that has made the “Hunger Games” franchise a blockbuster phenomenon. Starring Shailene Woodley as Beatrice “Tris” Prior and Theo James as Tobias “Four” Eaton, the film takes place in a near-future world in which the human population is divided into five distinct factions, with those who don’t fit neatly into any one category – a.k.a. the “Divergents” – all targeted for termination.
“You are different. You don’t fit into a category,” Dauntless leader Tori (Maggie Q) tells Tris in the new spot. “They can’t control you…you can’t let them find out about you.”
And so goes the main thrust of the story, which sees Tris adjusting to her new life as a member of the “Dauntless” faction while simultaneously attempting to keep her “Divergence” a secret.
The trailer itself does a good job of setting up the can’t-be-summed-up-in-a-single-sentence concept while also showcasing a good amount of bone-crunching action, in a clear attempt to pull a “Hunger Games” by bringing in young males who might otherwise be turned off by the romantic subplot between Tris and Four (an element that gets very little play in the teaser).
