For an industry built on colorful characters with superhuman strength, WWE has never really had a successful crossover into the world of comic books. All that is slated to change thanks to their new partnership with BOOM! Studios, the same company that has done outstanding work with the Adventure Time and Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers brands in comic book form. As first reported by Los Angeles Times, WWE and BOOM! will partner up for a series of comic books and graphic novels, though all details have not yet been revealed.
“Here at Boom! we’re thrilled to be a part of WWE’s return to the comic book medium,” said Boom! Studios Editor-in-Chief Matt Gagnon. “The WWE Universe is a passionate fanbase, and we aim to provide them with the comic series they’ve always wanted — a series featuring their favorite Superstars and storylines, a series that highlights the incredible history of the brand. An authentic series that matters.”
According to IGN, the first batch of WWE/BOOM! collaborations will roll out at San Diego Comic-Con later this month as a set of six one-page comics featuring current and past superstars under the heading “WWE: Then. Now. Forever.” Among the wrestlers set for inclusion are the New Day (illustrated by Rob Guillory) and John Cena (illustrated by Jamal Campbell). The back of each comic will touch on that wrestler’s background and in-ring achievements, and each will be drawn by Daniel Bayliss, colored by Doug Garbark and lettered by Jim Campbell.
WWE isn’t the only wrestling company trying to cross over into comic books: Earlier this year, Lucha Underground launched a comic book series of their own.
