Danny Brown Goes For Broke On His New Album, ‘Atrocity Exhibition’

Danny Brown‘s Atrocity Exhibition wasn’t due out until September 30. But — perhaps sensing that we needed a bit of good news after trudging through the presidential debates — the Old rapper dropped the album three days early. Everything we’ve heard up to this point has been incredible (from the stacked “Really Doe” to the grimy “Pneumonia“) and now you can stream the new album via Spotify and Apple Music.

Brown announced the surprise-ish release on Twitter, saying that he “couldn’t hold it no more longer.”

The album contains features from ScHoolboy Q, Kendrick Lamar, Earl Sweatshirt, Kelela, Petite Noir and Cypress Hill’s B-Real and, according to Brown, was inspired by the music of the Talking Heads and System of a Down. The title comes from a Joy Division song. Brown is on record as saying that his last album Old was made to make money, and this darker warped release better showcases his artistic point of view. This is a long-winded way of saying this album is a godd*mn trip, like everything else the yawpy Detroit rapper touches.

“It’s like robbing banks, almost; this could be the last one,” Brown told the New York Times, referring to the gamble he’s taking on Exhibition. “I love that level of riskiness.”
