Just like companies start shilling Christmas decorations when Halloween is barely over, now they’re trying to usher Fall in when September has barely begun, namely with pumpkin spice-flavored products. The newest product to join in? Pumpkin spice latte M&Ms.
As People reports (under their “Great Ideas” heading, hmm), M&Ms are gunning for Starbucks and their nauseatingly popular pumpkin spice latte, by appropriating the flavor for their popular candy and selling them exclusively in Target starting sometime this week. They’re also using sex to sell this particular flavor, featuring a comely female M&M on their packaging who’s holding a coffee cup and wearing a scarf and glasses.
Pumpkin spice latte M&Ms will join other seasonal flavors, such as the just-announced pecan pie flavor, and last year’s pumpkin spice version (not to be confused with the one that adds latte flavor in, all right?).
I’m ready for summer to be over as much as the next person, but companies are seriously getting carried away with this pumpkin spice business (I mean, a pumpkin spice condom, really?). Speaking as a person who has tried and hated pumpkin spice Hershey’s Kisses, I doubt that the M&M version will taste good, either. Maybe this is a sign that pumpkin spice has jumped the shark. Fingers crossed.
