The newest tracking numbers for Star Wars: The Force Awakens are unprecedented for several reasons. We already know about the film’s record-breaking first day of ticket sales, and we heard it’s on track to earn $2 billion, which would make it the third highest-grossing movie after Avatar and Titanic. Now an anonymous source at Collider has shared the current opening weekend estimates.
Reportedly, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is on track to open at $225 million, which would make it the biggest opening weekend of all-time, besting previous record holders Jurassic World ($208 million) and The Avengers ($207 million). It’s going to be helped along the way by a couple factors: having more screens and more showtimes than either of those previous record holders (or anything else, for that matter), and having no huge competition at IMAX screens for about a solid month.
On the other hand, there are a couple of reasons it may not break the record. All other Star Wars movies have released in May; none have never released so close to Christmas (December 18). Also, no movie released in December has grossed more than $100 million in its opening weekend. The December opening weekend record is definitely one The Force Awakens will have no challenge in breaking, if not being the biggest opening weekend ever. Releasing at a time of year when blockbusters usually don’t drop may prove to be a genius strategy. Is anybody not going to see Force Awakens? What other competition does it have? Spending time with the family? NO THANKS. Star Wars it is.
