According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are more than 800,000 divorces per year. That means once every 35-40 seconds, someone in the United States is getting divorced. Yes, by the time you’re done reading this article, multiple couples have broken up and filed their papers. The sad truth is that some couples simply don’t belong together, and it’s healthier for everyone when they split. But, some couples do belong together forever. Like California residents Nicholas and Rafaela Ordaz, who celebrated their 82nd wedding anniversary this week.
If you’re running the math through your head, know that Nicholas just blew out what would be a ridiculous amount of candles for his 102nd birthday the weekend before this nearly unprecedented wedding anniversary. When someone with that much life experience has advice, it’s a wise move to listen — these people know how it’s done. Their grandchildren have grandchildren.
So what were their keys to a healthy marriage? The couple, married in 1934, says there are three things every relationship needs: respect, affection, and not sweating the small stuff. Seems pretty simple, right?
To save you some time — no, this isn’t the longest marriage ever, not by a long shot. There are many marriages that have lasted longer, and the oldest/longest lasting couple is still kicking in England. Karam and Kartari Chand have been married for 90 years, 20 days and counting. I wonder if they have any tips for young marriages? Well… Any marriage is young compared to theirs.
