Who knew a trip to Berlin could fit so comfortably into an Englishman’s commute? A teenage Brit named Jordan Cox figured out an unlikely but awesome way to include a trip to the German city in his bid to get from Sheffield to Essex. The detour didn’t break Jordan’s bank either. In fact, it even saved him money.
As he outlines in the accompanying video of his journey, Jordan realized that he could pay the £50 to take the train from Sheffield to Essex or he could fly home with a layover in Berlin and pay £7.72 less for his trouble. Jordan, who was in Sheffield teaching a couponing class because OF COURSE, figured that the combo of savings, adventure and sightseeing was worth investigating. It’s the sort of trip that Jordan recognizes isn’t environmental friendly, but overall he says there can be value in exploring your detour options.
Ok, this isn’t for everyone as it can take a whole day to get to your final destination, but if you’re not in a rush, your focus is saving money and you fancy a little walk around a European city, it’s worth a look. Many of these airports are close to city centres, with cheap buses or trains taking you into the heart of the action, so you get to do a bit of exploring rather than waiting in an airport terminal.
