Ghostbusters is coming July 15, and it’s bringing a lot of proton weapons — to fight ghosts and inflict property damage — with it. The above featurette is ostensibly about their proton gadgets, but it also gives us more of an idea about how the movie will come together.
The proton gadgets will be evolving throughout the movie, ranging from a crude proton cannon with, uh, range problems, to the fancy grenades and pistols we see in the trailer. We also get a closer look at those proton knuckles and nearly witness a deadly high five to boot. It appears Hollywood movie magic doesn’t extend to props, as the cast points out the proton packs are so heavy they might as well contain nuclear material.
We also get to see how a few gadgets are reinvented. We’ve already seen the new proton pack, but we also get to see the new trap, which is more of a tube than a box and has fancy gull-wing action. It doesn’t seem to have any laser bear traps to it, which is a shame, but hey, they might turn up elsewhere in the movie.
Finally, if you pay attention, there’s a bit more of a hint of the movie’s fundamental plot. If you’ve looked closely, you’ve noticed the climactic battle in Time Square appears to involve a time warp back to the early ’80s, which is intriguing all on its own, and a clip of Slimer here indicates he’s got a cameo during that sequence. Since this appears to be a movie with no ’80s ‘Busters in it, one has to wonder if, perhaps, they’ve got something up their sleeves in that regard. We’ll find out July 15.
