If you can remember all the way back to 2015, you might remember rampant speculation about whether Dolph Ziggler would re-sign with WWE, or if he might go to Lucha Underground or even retire from wrestling altogether. All that speculation was put to bed when he re-signed, but now it’s a new year and a new crop of speculation about his wrestling future now that he’s put his career on the line against The Miz’s Intercontinental Championship at Sunday’s No Mercy pay-per-view.
On Episode 13 of the Ric Flair Show podcast, Flair offered his own two cents on the title vs. career match and has a pretty unique take on the situation: he thinks Dolph might hang them up after losing Sunday’s bout and take a behind-the-scenes role with WWE.
“I’ve heard that [his contract is up] and I hope it’s not true. He has too much left to offer to the business. I think — and I hope I’m not letting the cat out of the bag — I think they want him to work in the office. But he loves [living in] Phoenix and I don’t know that that will happen. He can be with the company as long as he wants to be. He’s that good … he’s in a good place.
…
“I hope he doesn’t walk away from it this early, but if he does, I’m sure he’s done well with his money. He’s made a lot of money, so he’ll be okay.”
It should be noted that there are conflicting reports about when exactly Ziggler’s contract is up; some sources say there may in fact be multiple years remaining on his deal. Some other sources are speculating that Dolph might lose the match as part of a (gasp!) storyline retirement and come back in some manner of repackaging further down the line.
Personally, I think the guy’s just going to win the Intercontinental title on Sunday. Ziggler’s Razor. We’ll just have to wait and see.
